Worcester and Pairs Head
Sunday 2 / Saturday 8 October

On Sunday 2nd October three Warwick crews travelled to Worcester to take part in the first of the season’s winter races – held in unusually hot and sunny conditions. Two of the crews had no opposition so used the race as training for the next of the winter races. The men’s Vet B 4+ of Richard Pember, Jon Martin, Matt Casey and Matt Davies, coxed by Barry Meatyard, came home in 16:23.40 and the WIM1 2x of Joy Green and Ailsa Curtis completed the course in a solid time of 17:54.94. It was left to WIM3 2x Tanya Podinovskaia and Kate Parkinson, competing above their normal status at IM2, to claim victory for the club, which they did in style with a comfortable win in 18:32.80.

The following weekend the two doubles were in action again, this time competing in London at the Pairs Head of the River race, on the Boat Race course, between Chiswick and Hammersmith. Both crews performed well on the day, although ultimately losing out to crews more accustomed to navigating the tideway. Joy Green and Ailsa Curtis completed the course in 13:51.83, coming a very respectable 4th in the WIM1 2x category. Tanya Podinovskaia and Kate Parkinson were not far behind, finishing in 13:57.60 to claim a place in the top half of the WIM3 2x category.

Warwick at World Rowing Masters 2011

The World Masters Championships take place every year over 4 days and held over 1km, but in a different location every year. Competitors arrive from all over the world from Brazil and USA to China, Japan and Australia. This year the event was raced at the rowing lake in Poznan, Poland.

Warwick had two crews entered in the event, a Masters C 4- of Chris Skuse & Dan Simkin from Warwick teaming up with Peter Jacobs and Ray Wilson from Poole; and Chris Skuse in a Masters D 1x.

For the 4- race the weather was dreadful with a screaming tail wind and white horses on the regatta lake surface. 7 competitors lined up; Poland, Ireland, Hungary, Latvia, 2 from Germany and Warwick from GB.

Warwick had a solid start and were neck and neck with 3 other crews, the 2 from Germany and the Polish crew. At half way they crept up to second, half a length down on the first German crew and a canvas up on Poland. During the second half the German crew pushed out to a length and Warwick kept pace with the Poles. However, in the last 100 m the Poles made a big push for the line and just crept past to leave Warwick finishing 3rd. Whilst slightly disappointed with 3rd, the Warwick-Poole composite satisfyingly beat their 2010 Irish rivals into 4th place.

For Chris’s race in his single, the weather had calmed down to near perfect racing conditions. There were 8 competitors in the event, from Spain, Poland, Germany, Russia, Italy, Portugal and Brazil. The race got off to an exciting start, with all 8 crews vying for the lead during the first 250m. By half way, the Warwick sculler was in a close third place behind the Spaniard and Pole. Chris’s determined push caught & passed the Pole and closed down the Spaniard. However the Spaniard proved too far ahead to catch & Warwick settled for a hard fought 2nd place.

Warwick Regatta
Saturday 20 August

On Saturday, 20th August, Warwick Boat Club hosted its annual regatta, attracting over 100 crews from around the country. The successful event was well supported via sponsorship from local business and the bar and tea tent were well used by both competitors as well as passers by lured in by the smell of the BBQ.

As races were hotly contested the day saw its share of thrills and spills, with three capsizes adding to the entertainment. One of these came as a crew crossed the finishing line to victory, and were unable to contain their excitement. Some crews also got a little tangled with reeds and river weed, but this was all part of the day’s challenges.

A total of 16 Warwick crews took to the water, including 4 new crews racing at primary status. Rod Jones did particularly well to complete a race in his Primary 1x having capsized on his way to the start line. 5 of the Warwick crews claimed a win on home territory, including Richard Pember and Matt Davies in their Mas A 2x, who claimed only 20 minutes practice before the big day. Despite unfortunate disqualification in an earlier event, the men's 4+ of Ian Hodge, Adrian Clark, Peter Worth and Peter Masters, coxed by Joy Green, won in a private match against Evesham Rowing Club. Kate Parkinson won a tightly fought race in her W Mas A 1x, only inching ahead in the last section of the race. Captain of Boats Paul Gosling won in his Mas B 1x against former WBC member Graham Giles, and shortly afterwards stormed to victory in a newly formed Mixed IM1 2x with Ailsa Curtis.

In line with tradition the squash and tennis sections competed against each other in coxed fours for the final race of the day, each crew having been allowed no more than 4 practice sessions. After a close start to the race the squash team raced home to glory for yet another consecutive year.

Despite an early threat of rain, the sun came out and the day ended with a prize giving ceremony in glorious sunshine, with Stratford Upon Avon Boat Club being awarded the Victor Ludorum for most wins of the day.

Warwick Regatta - this Saturday
Saturday 20 August

Photo
Saturday the 20th August brings Warwick’s annual regatta in the boat club’s 150th anniversary year. Warwick’s regatta is a friendly event with a challenging 500m course. The second bend & so named “magnetic reeds” have unstuck many a crew.

Recent changes to the rules of racing introduced by the national governing body has jeopardised the viability of provincial events such as ours. Despite this, the event is expecting around 100 competing crews, encompassing juniors, seniors, veterans & mixed crews. The latter will not only be competing for the traditional tankards, but also for champagne.

The regatta is free and you can watch the action from either Myton Fields or St Nicholas Park. With refreshments available to all in the Myton Fields, why not come and join us?

Mixed Results at Bewdley Regatta
23/24 July 2011

Photo
Warwick Boat Club travelled to Bewdley’s two day regatta. Generally, Bewdley regatta requires chaotic chasing round, attempting to find one’s opposition, often discovering one of their crew / boat is already busy in a different race on the river, resulting in racing nowhere near the scheduled race time. This year was no exception, though the chasing round was at least in glorious sunshine.

Saturday’s racing gave mixed results. The novice men’s 2x of Ben van Duren and Adam Edgeller were attacked by a buoy during the race throwing off their rhythm, from which they couldn’t recover. The established Masters B 4+ (Rich Pember, Jon Martin, Matt Casey & Matt Davies, coxed by Joy Green) saw off their 1st round opposition, setting up a final with their arch rivals Ross. Though a closely fought race, Ross just edged the win in the final strokes.

The newly formed Mixed IM1 2x of Andy Speechly & Ailsa Curtis saw off their younger & more imposing opposition to a clear victory, a good start for this combination! Andy Speechly also raced in his Mas C 1x, also racing to a convincing victory, collecting his second pot of the day. The late race was the Mas B 2x of Paul Gosling & Andre Delahaye, who also took victory against their “slightly older” opposition.

Sunday saw even hotter weather, with crews seeking shade in between races.

The early race of the day was the first competition for the women’s novice 2x of Becky Dilley & Lisa Taverner. They raced well & overcame some demons, but couldn’t edge out their rivals. The men’s novice double of van Duren & Edgeller put in a better performance than on Saturday, but were ultimately beaten by a neater crew.

John Hunter’s Mas F 1x looked tidy but was also beaten into 2nd place. John then teamed up with Keith Hunter in their Mas G 2x, racing to a comfortable victory.

The new Mixed IM3 2x of Jon Martin & Kate Parkinson won their first round, but were beaten in the final by a more experienced crew. Both then stepped into the Mixed IM1 VIII to race a straight final against Bewdley, the home club. The crew comprised Ailsa Curtis, Joy Green, Rich Pember, Jon Martin, Matt Casey, Ben van Duren, Esther Kinnersley & Kate Parkinson, coxed by an enthusiastic Ali Tonkin. Though initially a close and manic race, the Warwick crew edged a lead & finally finished clear of the Bewdley crew, leaving little water left in the river in the process!

The final race of the day was Kate Parkinson in her Mas A 1x, also her 3rd different crew of the day. Kate pulled an early lead & raced to a convincing victory, her first win in a single scull. To celebrate such a victory, Kate was treated to a swim in the river!

Two day’s racing, six wins. A great preparation for the 20th August when Warwick Boat Club host their own regatta. The club is open to new members: http://www.warwickboatclub.co.uk/

National Masters Championships

Warwick Boat Club travelled to the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham to compete in the National Masters Championships. The event is held on the purpose built, multi lane, rowing lake, over a distance of 1km.

Despite it being June, the sunshine only lasted until 10am after which the weather turned very wet & very windy. Not ideal racing conditions!

Warwick fielded two women’s doubles in the Masters A event. The two crews train together & the friendly rivalry continued at the races. Both qualified easily for the final where they lost out to two strong crews from home club Nottingham. The internal race was won by Green & Curtis over Parkinson & Podinvoskaia … this time.

The two Warwick crews teamed up to race in the quads event, but in rough conditions came second to the Nottingham crew.

The men’s Masters B coxed four consisted of Pember, Martin, Davies & super sub Owen, coxed by Joy Green. The Warwick crew came up against arch rivals Ross in the straight final. Warwick won the last encounter of these crews, but in rough conditions & over a longer distance, the Warwick crew struggled to find their rhythm & will have to find another event to race Ross.

The established Masters B double of Gosling & Delahaye qualified for their final, a close & exciting race, resulting in a third place for Warwick, with less than a second separating the 1st 3 crews.

The remaining three crews all raced in the Masters D classification. Skuse & Charlesworth raced in their pair, coming in 4th in the final. The two also raced in the coxless four along with Poole, scoring a silver medal in their final. In the final race of the day, Skuse & Charlesworth were joined by Simkin & rowers from Poole in the coxed eight. After winning their heat, the crew were a fraction disappointed coming in to a silver in the final, yet after a long day’s racing, an impressive feat.

Chris Skuse had also raced the previous weekend at Bridgnorth, winning the Masters D/E single sculls.

Squad Sessions - Starting on Tuesday 14 June
Every Tuesday at 6pm (all welcome)

We've decided to trial a 'Squad Session' at 6pm on a Tuesday for all those of you who aren't in crews or just want a bit more varied training. Well see how it goes for the next four weeks and if it's popular then we'll make it a regular thing.

The session is open to anyone and the main goal is to give the new and the currently crewless an opportunity to try some combinations out. It's also a valuable opportunity for the less experienced rowers to learn from the more experienced ones, so I'd like to encourage the more experienced amongst us to join in as that will really help make it a success. Obviously, we'll try to play to everyone's strengths but it is possible that you'll end up rowing on the wrong side, sculling or coxing depending on who turns up. Who knows... a whole new opportunity may await!

There will be four river slots and various boats pre-booked, and I hope to have the video camera out to capture some fine rowing footage for analysis in the clubhouse over a pint afterwards.

Although I don't need to know exact numbers, it would be great to have an indication, so if you can have a word with me or Joy or drop us an e-mail then that would be much appreciated. Please aim to be there reasonably prompt so that we can pick crews and get out on the river with the minimum of wasted time.

Please do consider coming along, whatever your experience, and I look forward to seeing you there...

Warwick at windy Peterborough

Photo
Warwick Boat Club travelled to Peterborough’s two day regatta in some of the most challenging conditions of the season. Peterborough’s purpose built rowing lake unfortunately left the rowers exposed, racing into a strong & gusting headwind. Many crews on the day struggled getting onto the start, and races were more about dealing with the conditions than beating other crews.

Saturday’s racing was over the longer, 1km course. The women’s IM 3 double of Tanya Podinovskaia & Kate Parkinson were the first to brave the conditions & were beaten into 3rd place, despite overtaking white horses! Next up were the Masters’ B double of Andre Delahaye & new dad Paul Gosling. The pair led their final until the closing stages where they were caught & passed. Maybe the sleepless nights were telling. The final Warwick race of the day was the women’s IM 1 double of Joy Green & Ailsa Curtis. This proved to be a close race between the Warwick crew and a composite double. Warwick missed out by less than a length to the crew in arguably the more wind sheltered lane, leaving Warwick eager for a rematch.

Sunday saw the Sprint Regatta, raced over 500m. The weather conditions were again dire, with a constant head wind making for slow times all round and gusts from the side making it very difficult for crews to align on the start.

The IM 3 double scull of Kate Parkinson and Tanya Podinovskaia won their heat comfortably but went on to be beaten into second place in the final by a crew they had passed in the heat - seems there was some tactical racing taking place!

The IM 2 Coxed Four of Claire Roberts, Melanie Barratt, Rebekah Dryhurst and Anna Pember, coxed by club stalwart Alison Tonkin, made a fine quick start and looked to have taken almost a length's lead inside the first 100m, however the conditions proved decisive and they were eventually beaten by their opponents who coped slightly better on the day.

Veteran sculler John Hunter teamed up with fellow vet Barry Meatyard after his usual sculling partner had been incapacitated by a fall. The pair made a valiant attempt in the the Masters E/F Double Sculls, coming a respectable third in the very windy conditions which was a very good effort for a 'scratch' crew.

John Hunter and Kate Parkinson also each competed in single sculls during the day, which is no mean feat in such windy weather. Both put in tidy performances but were ultimately overcome by classy opposition who coped better on the day.

Two Warwick crews competed alongside Northampton in the masters novice double sculls; masters referring to their veteran status rather than experience in this case! The race was won for Warwick by Richard Pember and Jon Martin, taking a couple of length's lead over Alex Murray and Joseph Oliver, competing in their first regatta, who in turn had a lead of several lengths over Northampton by the finish. All three crews were seriously hampered by the conditions and were delighted to have come through the ordeal without a capsize.

Shrewsbury regatta
14-15 May

On another blustery weekend, Warwick Boat Club raced at the two day Shrewsbury regatta.

Saturday’s racing was over 1km and featured three Warwick doubles. Ben van Duren & Adam Edgeller raced in the Novice event, but suffered with their steering & lost out in the 1st round. Ruth Fountain & Ali Hobbs newly promoted to IM3 status showed they were still finding their feet in at the higher status, also missing out in their event. Joy Green & Ailsa Curtis in the IM1 2x missed out by a mere ½ length in their final, leaving an unsuccessful day’s racing.

Sunday’s racing was over the short course of 500m. Edgeller & van Duren again raced their 2x in the novice event & although improved their steering from the previous day, still couldn’t overcome their opposition.

The well established crew of Rich Pember, Jon Martin, Matt Casey & Matt Davies, coxed by Joy Green raced in the Masters B/C 4+ event. This set them at a handicap disadvantage in their first round, but they caught & overtook their opposition to reach the final. This set up a race against arch rivals Ross. This generated a close race in the final, with the Warwick crew digging deep & finding the strength of lions to inch ahead of the Ross crew, taking a memorable victory.

The last race of the day was the IM1 Mixed 8+ race, the crew comprising Rich Pember, Jon Martin, Matt Casey, Matt Davies, Ailsa Curtis, Joy Green, Esther Kinnersley & Kate Parkinson, coxed by Tanya Podinovskaia. The straight final set up a race with visiting Irish club Athlunkard, who had won a significant proportion of the weekend’s races. The final was never close though, with the power & experience of the Warwick crew storming through the Irish crew, taking Warwick’s second victory of the day.

A good end to a weekend for the club which is about to celebrate its 150th anniversary. http://www.warwickboatclub.co.uk/

Warwick at Evesham
30 April / 1 May

Photo
Warwick Boat Club competed at Evesham’s two day regatta in sunny, but very windy conditions.

Saturday saw two Warwick crews both in the Masters C 1x win their respective heats & line up a Warwick-Warwick final. The club couldn’t lose. Andy Speechly took the win over Chris Skuse. Chris & pairs partner John Charlesworth also raced on the Sunday, though lost out to final winners Stourport.

Sunday saw Warwick descend on Evesham in greater numbers. Ruth Fountain & Ali Hobbs had their money’s worth, racing in both the women’s IM3 (morning) and novice (afternoon) double sculls events. The pair used the IM3 event as good practice for their race technique and allowed Ali to perfect her line, finally missing out in the final. However, their confidence built, the two smashed through their quarter & semi finals, then taking a solid victory in their final. As this win lost the girls their novice status, the club treated them to a much deserved swim in the river!

The well established IV of Rich Pember, Jon Martin, Matt Casey, Matt Davies, coxed by Joy Green raced to victory, rowing above their status in the Senior IVs event. Three of the crew then doubled up in the IM1 Mixed IVs event, which was held in celebration of the Royal Wedding & consequently raced in fancy dress! The crew of Rich Pember, Jon Martin, Ailsa Curtis & Joy Green, coxed by Ali Tonkin won their first round, but lost out in the second. However, had their been a award for best dressed crew, there was no doubt who would have taken home the prize!

The final win of the weekend went to Keith Kennedy & John Hunter in their Masters G 2x. The handicap gave their opposition a 4 second headstart, but Keith & John steadily rowed through them to victory. The win was particularly poignant for Keith who first raced (& won) at Evesham in 1961, in a junior IVs event, this year & event thus being the 50th anniversary of that win. It was fair when the commentator this weekend, announced that there was a fair amount of experience in the race! A special day for one who has dedicated so much to the sport of rowing.

Warwick at the London Eights Heads
2/3 April 2011

Warwick's men's VIIIs raced at the men's Head of the River Race (HoRR) and the Veteran's Head of the River Race. Both are raced on the same course as the University Boat Race, in the opposite direction.

At the Men's HoRR, the Warwick Intermediate 1 crew comprised Andre Delahaye, Paul Gosling, Paul Taylor, Richard Owen, Richard Pember, Matt Davies, Matt Casey and Jon Martin, coxed by Ali Tonkin. Despite near ideal racing conditions, the crew had a challenging start, with the boating and row to the start of the race impeded by the sheer number of other crews & consequential river traffic. Warwick completed the race in 19:41.

The Veteran event on the Sunday saw two Warwick crews take part. The younger ‘C’ Warwick composite crew (Warwick, Walbrook and Poole - average age 45/50) which featured Chris Skuse, Dan Simkins & John Charlesworth, covered themselves in glory by narrowly missing first place in their age group. The previous weekend, the same crew returned victorious from Kingston Head.

The slightly older ‘F’ Warwick crew (average age 60/65) comprised Keith Kennedy, John Hunter, Mike Rigby, Rob Holmes, Tim Walmesley, Ken Butler, Martin le Tocq, and Barry Meatyard with Joy Green coxing. The latter were not quite so nimble but as with many things it was not so much the winning as the taking part that was the essence. As Max Boyce was wont to say…’I was there’ …and this was very much the case at this prestigious event that had a real international flavour this year attracting a large contingent of European crews and an especially large number from Italy. During the wait at the marshalling area there was much good humour (probable due to nerves at the thought of the exertions to come) as old friends were recognized and past duels remembered. Afterwards, on the river bank there was further gripping of hands and slapping of backs as new friendships were forged, current ones reaffirmed and old friendships renewed. The day after, however, when the anti-inflammatory tablets have worn off and the tolls on bodies that have lost the bloom of youth are at their worst the words ‘never again’ filter to the fore. Memory, however, dulls the senses and in twelve months time when the event comes round again and some one asks if we are up for entering the Head of the River again all will be forgotten and we will all be up for it again…rather like Shakespeare wrote…’then will he strip his sleeve and show the scars and say, these wounds I had on Crispin’s day’.

Warwick has also taken delivery of two new boats, both double sculls. These were named on ceremony, in our idyllic setting by the castle, by Paul Gosling (left) and Andy Speechly (right) with the traditional champagne blessing.

WEHORR & Gloucester Head
17/18 March 2011

WEHORR & Gloucester Head

On the sunny Saturday while England played Ireland in the six nations, Warwick Boat club travelled to the Women’s Eights Head of the River Race. The event is held on the 4 ¼ mile Boat Race course in London. Warwick’s eight consisted of Tanya Podinovskaia, Joy Green, Ailsa Curtis, Ruth Fountain, Mel Barratt, Rebekah Dryhurst, super sub Esther Kinnersley & Kate Parkinson, coxed by Ali Tonkin.

With near perfect racing conditions the Warwick crew overtook Newark to finish in 21:33, placing 139 of 300 crews. Although racing meant missing watching the England – Ireland six nations match the crew did get to watch the GB women’s crew showing the rest of the crews how racing should be done, finishing in an impressive 18:41.

An equally sunny, but windy day saw five Warwick Boat Club crews racing at the 4km Gloucester Head. The Masters F crew had no opposition, so used the event as a warm up for the upcoming Veterans’ Head of the River Race. The crew finished in a respectable time of 15:40 & consisted of Mike Rigby, Rob Holmes, John Vedy, Ken Butler, Tim Walmesley, Barry Meatyard, Martin Le Tocq & John Hunter, coxed by honorary veteran Joy Green.

The novice double of Alex Murray & Joe Oliver raced Gloucester as their first ever event. They successfully navigated the difficult course, finishing 3rd in their category in 19:44.

The afternoon division saw the men’s Intermediate 1 VIII of Jon Martin, Matt Davies, Phil Tonkin, Rich Owen, Paul Gosling, Andre Delahaye, Shaun Lay, Adam Edgeller coxed by Ali Tonkin. With last minute substitutions the crew had just the row to the start to gel as a crew, but still pulled out a good performance, finishing 2nd in their category in 13:55.

The day’s tailwind was most appreciated by the final two crews, both of whom had also raced the previous day. Kate Parkinson put in a strong performance in her Intermediate 2 1x, finishing second in her category in 18:40. The Intermediate 1 2x of Joy Green & Ailsa Curtis raced to victory in their category finishing in 16:49. Green & Curtis were presented with their medals by 2010 World Champion Beth Rodford.

Warwick race at Worcester
19 February 2011

Photo
On a wet February morning, Warwick Boat Club travelled to Worcester to compete in their main Head of the river race. At 6km, this was the second longest race of Warwick’s fixture list. Three hardy crews braved the rain and fast flowing river conditions.

The men’s Intermediate 1 4+ raced in a new combination of Rich Pember, Jon Martin, Matt Casey & George Hunt, coxed by Ali Tonkin. They were edged out to second place, finishing in a time of 20:53.

The men’s Masters F 8+ also had a tough race, finishing in 21:32, thus beating the home club of Worcester, but missing out to a storming crew from Pengwern. Warwick's crew comprised Barry Meatyard, Tim Walmsley, Ken Butler, Martin Le Tocq, Rob Holmes, Mike Rigby, John Hunter, Keith Kennedy, coxed by honorary veteran Joy Green.

In the afternoon division, the women’s Intermediate 2 coxless quad raced in a new combination of Kate Parkinson, Mel Barratt, Joy Green & Ailsa Curtis. Despite the boat taking on water during the race, the crew charged home to victory in 20:38.

Two of the men’s Masters F 8+ (Keith Kennedy & John Hunter) also raced at Weybridge Winter Head, in Masters G 2x. They were pitted against two doubles, albeit slightly younger in age, from Lymington in Hampshire. The 3km upstream course from Walton to Chertsey Lock proved a tough challenge with a strong stream caused by recent rain and coupled with a blustery cross head wind. Undaunted, Hunter and Kennedy stuck to their task and achieved an excellent performance beating, after a handicap allowance had been applied, one of the Lymington doubles but being shaded out by the other. There was some good humoured banter and new friendships forged afterwards over a cup of tea in the club house after which the two tired gents journeyed home for a well earned rest.

Warwick victorious at Stourport
30 January 2011

Warwick Boat Club competed at Stourport Head race on a cold winter's day. With conditions near to ideal (excepting the near freezing temperatures!) the scene was set for some good racing.
Five Warwick crews raced in all. The women's intermediate 3 double scull of Kate Parkinson & Tanya Podinovskaia came home with an impressively comfortable victory in 15:26.

The women's intermediate 1 double scull of Joy Green & Ailsa Curtis came second in their intermediate 1 category in 15:12, as did Andy Speechly in his Masters C single scull in 15:15. The remaining two crews of Keith Kennedy & John Hunter in their masters G double scull and Martin Le Tocq in his masters F single scull, had no opposition, but put in solid performances & clocked good times of 15:33 & 17:30 respectively.

The club welcomes new members, who should visit our website at http://www.warwickboatclub.co.uk/rowing/rowingsquads.php

Warwick Scratch Regatta
12 December 2010

Photo
On a cold winter’s morning, with frost on the ground, Warwick Boat Club held their annual Scratch Regatta. This is an internal event to boat club, with crews selected at random. This year the event had a twist with racing in coxed quad sculls rather than the usual fours. The racing was held over a 400m downstream course, finishing near the castle. With eight crews racing, the standard varied hugely, which is the nature and purpose of the event, to have people row together who would not otherwise.

Club spirit was running high, with rowers cheering the races on, whilst waiting for their races and munching on bacon sandwiches.

The final of the event was a close one, the crews level as they passed the boathouse. The crew of Paul Gosling, Helene Moussard, Chris Liddard & Matt Casey, coxed by Ali Tonkin just edged out the crew of Ailsa Curtis, Ken, John Hunter & Shaun Lay, coxed by Joy Green. The winners were each presented with a bottle of port, the runners up a festive Christmas pudding.

On a frosty Sunday morning, in the shadow of Warwick castle, Warwick boat club added three new boats to their fleet.

The double scull was named Beauchamp, referring to previous Earls of Warwick. The boat was funded by The King Henry VIII Endowed Trust as part of a three-year Warwick Schools Rowing Project. This being a partnership project between Aylesford School, Myton School, Warwick Boat Club and The King Henry VIII Trust Fund; aiming at introducing the sport of rowing to the two state schools in the town. Mike Rigby did the honours of revealing the name & christening the boat with champagne.

The two single sculls were bought by the Warwick Rowing Club to refresh the fleet. The larger boat was named by and after Julia Reynolds, the wife of the current Boat Club Captain. The lighter weight boat named “Scotch on the Rocks” by resident Scot Joy Green. Both single sculls were christened by their namesakes on a day so cold the champagne on the boats promptly froze!

Warwick's Weekend of Racing
29th November 2010

In spite of the freezing conditions, six Warwick Boat Club crews competed in last Saturday's Head of the River race organised by Evesham Rowing club over nearly three miles of their stretch of the river Avon. The Warwick coxed four of Andre Delahaye, Paul Taylor, Richard Owen and Paul Gosling, coxed by Caroline Gosling, clocked up their first win of the winter season in the Intermediate 1 category, narrowly beating their Warwick rivals (Richard Pember, Jon Martin, Matt Casey and Matt Davies, coxed by Ali Tonkin) by a mere one second in a thrilling 16 minute race.

Three Warwick single scullers also took part in the race - no mean feat in the conditions where numb fingers and excess clothing presented almost as much of a challenge as the row itself! Andrew Speechly fought to the finish line against a freezing head-wind to record a victory in the Masters C single sculls category, and both Martin Le Toq (Masters F) and Kate Parkinson (Women's Intermediate 2) were placed second in their respective categories.

The double scull of Alison Hobbs and Ruth Fountain raced well and was placed fourth in the Women's IM3 category, a good result given they were racing above their status.

Although it took all the athletes some hours to thaw out afterwards, everyone enjoyed themselves and Warwick thanks its Evesham rivals for hosting a very well run event.

Meanwhile one Warwick crew raced in London on the 4 ¼ mile boat race course in the Scullers Head of the River Race. Akin to Evesham, the Thames was unseasonably cold, chilling the crews waiting to race. With 500 crews entered, all single scullers, the river looked like it was full of water boatmen. The Warwick sculler, Ailsa Curtis, raced in the IM2 category & finished in a time of 26:05.

The following day, while the rest of the club was recovering & thawing out, the men’s Masters F eight raced in the Head of the Avon Gorge. This is a 6.8km race on a tidal river, finishing under the Clifton suspension bridge. Like the rest of the weekend, the cold weather tested the crew of John Hunter, Keith Kennedy, Martin Le Tocq, Rob Holmes, Mike Rigby, Ken Butler, John Veedy & Tim Walmsly coxed by Barry Meatyard. The crew raced well, testing a Stratford Masters D crew, but final results have yet to be published.

Warwick BC at Fours Head
25th November 2010

Warwick Rowing Club raced in the two Fours Head of the River Races on the Thames in London. Both events race the same 4 ¼ mile course as the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race, in the reverse direction.

The Saturday’s event was the Veteran Fours Head with 190 crews, including two from Warwick. First of the Warwick crews was the Masters B IV of Rich Pember, Jon Martin, Matt Casey & Matt Davies coxed by Joy Green.

Their race caused excitement when Warwick was being caught by Vesta whilst simultaneously catching Ross. Skillful steering by cool headed Green kept Warwick safe and the lion like power from the crew resulted in Warwick finally overtaking long standing rivals Ross, to finish in an impressive 21:16.

Next off was the Warwick Intermediate 3 IV of Adam Edgeller, Ben Van Duren, Adam Taylor & Chao Yu coxed by Ailsa Curtis. This was the crew’s first Head race and their first encounter of the Thames, finishing in a solid 22:46.

Sunday’s event was the Fours Head of the River, boasting over 500 crews and although colder & slightly rougher water than Saturday, this was still a marked improvement from the previous year where the event is cancelled due to bad weather. Warwick’s sole entry was the newly formed Women’s Intermediate 1 coxless quad of Kate Parkinson, Tanya Podinovskaia, Joy Green & Ailsa Curtis. The latter two having coxed the two crews on the Saturday were determined to show their men’s crews how it should be done! After battling with tough opposition, the crew came home in a strong 21:58

Warwick Regatta a Huge Success
24th August 2010

Photo
Warwick Boat Club hosted it’s annual regatta on Sat 21st Aug with 117 crews in 35 different events from 12 different clubs all competing on the picturesque 500m course. Starting at the foot of Warwick Castle and concluding in St Nicholas Park and including a seemingly magnetic patch of reeds, which proved to be a challenge for the visiting and home crews alike.

Despite the weather changing from bright sunshine to torrential downpours, the atmosphere of competitors, supporters and hosts remained buoyant throughout the day.

Warwick’s own crews took home two wins; the newly formed double scull of Phil Tonkin and Adam Edgeller; and the mixed IM2 4+ of Paul Gosling, Caroline Gosling, Catherine Harvey, Dan Simpkins, coxed by Joy Green.

There were all ages represented at the regatta featuring Masters events for those of mature years and the women’s new rower singles which was contested by 3 junior scullers, 2 of whom were only 9 years old and had only recently taken up rowing following completion of a short learn to row course at Stowe School. The winner after 3 gruelling rounds was Martha Corby.

The conclusion of the day was the annual race between novice rowing representatives from the club’s tennis and squash sections where the crews have 4 sessions to get to grips with rowing. This year was an unusually close race, with squash just pipping tennis to the line, thus perpetuating the intra-club rivalry and for another year.

In addition to event wins, the Victor Ludorum prize is awarded to the club with the greatest number of wins, this year, despite many wins from both Evesham and Stratford, Trentham took home the trophy.

Victory for Warwick Men at Oxford
24th August 2010

Photo
On the Sunday following Warwick's home regatta, the men’s IM2 crew of Jon Martin, Tom Grinstead, Sam Hyde and Ben Badcock, coxed by Ali Tonkin competed at Oxford City Regatta. Despite an exhausting previous day of marshalling and other regatta duties the crew were victorious, beating Oxford Academicals by a length and a half in the semi-final, and an experienced Hertford College crew by only 2 feet in a tensely fought final.

Warwick Women Successful at Stourport
20th August 2010

Photo
Following strong results from the men's squad at Bewdley regatta, Warwick's women's squad dominated at Stourport's two day Regatta last weekend.

Torrential rain on the Saturday framed the day's racing. The women's IM2 4+ (Karen Cabana, Anna Pember, Claire Roberts, Holly Fowler, coxed by Ali Tonkin) proved their hard training has been worthwhile, beating Stourport in their final by a comfortable 2 lengths. The other win of the day was the men's IM2 8+ (Shaun Lay, Phil Tonkin, Joy Green, Matt Casey, Jon Martin, Rich Pember, Sam Hyde, Tom Grinstead coxed by Ali Tonkin). Before racing, the crew composition changed, with Joy Green & novice Phil Tonkin joining the usual line up. Their opposition in the final were complacent seeing the Warwick crew not being all male. Clearly they've never met Joy before! Warwick stormed to a clear victory over Thames club Quintin, losing Phil his novice status in the process, resulting in the traditional dunking in the river.

The Sunday's racing brought glorious sunshine in complete contrast to the day before. Tom Grinstead raced in his first ever single sculling race & although he didn't win, neither did he crash or fall in, a good result for a first race.

The women's Novice 4+ (Lisa Taverner, Becks Clarke, Beks Dryhurst, Becky Dilley, coxed by Tanya Podinovskaia) won their final comfortably against Hereford. This lost the whole crew their novice status, who celebrated by swimming in the river. The men's Masters B 4+ raced Ross (National Champions in this event) in the final. Through an exciting final, the two crews were never separated by clear water, with Ross winning by ¾ length. This was a far closer result than in their previous encounter, giving the determination that the next race will go Warwick's way.

The final win of the weekend went to Warwick's women's IM3 4+ crew of Ester Kinnersley, Kate Parkinson, Paula Williams, Rachel Hughes, coxed by Joy Green. The crew battled through 3 rounds, with the final against Quintin being the closest race of the whole day. Coming into the home straight the crews were almost level and with cheers of encouragement from the bank, the Warwick crew inched ahead to win by a mere canvas.

Bewdley Regatta Report
27th July 2010

Warwick Boat Club descended on Bewdley’s two day regatta in force, with 17 crews in action over the weekend.

The men’s IM2 8+ of S Lay, T Grinstead, A Delahaye, M Casey, P Gosling, B Badcock, J Martin, R Pember, coxed by A Tonkin beat a strong Exeter crew in the final by a heart stopping 1/3 of a length.

The men’s 4+ of C Yu, A Taylor, B Van Duren, A Edgeller coxed by A Curtis had a shaky start in the semi-final, but rowed to a strong victory in the final. This lost the crew their novice status, which was appropriately celebrated by a crew dunking.

The second novice win of the day was the men’s double of T Grinstead & B Badcock, who joined the novice four’s celebration in the river.

The women’s Masters B double of M Kok & M Delahaye also put in a commanding performance winning their event comfortably.

A Speechly was much in demand in 3 finals late in the day, winning his Mas C 1x, but missing out in the Mixed 4+ along with S Burns, C Harvey, H Moussard, coxed by T Podinovskaia. The men’s Sen 2x event resulted in a Warwick-Warwick final of A Speechly & S Burns up against club rivals P Gosling & A Delahaye The latter coming home with the prize pots.

The remaining three Warwick crews in action on Saturday were the women’s IM2 4+ of K Cabena, A Pember, C Roberts, H Fowler, coxed by A Tonkin; the women’s 1x of K Parkinson, racing two categories above her own status; and the second mixed 4+ of R Pember, J Martin, E Kinnersley & K Parkinson, coxed by A Curtis.

Sunday saw the final victory of the weekend by the men’s IM2 4+ of M Davies, M Casey, J Martin, R Pember, coxed by Joy Green. This win promoted the successful crew to the IM1 category. Also in action on the Sunday were the men’s IM3 8+, the men’s IM2 8+, J Hunter in a Mas F 1x and K Parkinson in a closely fought race missing out by a mere ½ length.

All in, the club went home with a mighty 6 wins.

Warwick at Henley Veterans Regatta
13th July 2010

Four crews from Warwick Boat Club entered the Henley Veteran Regatta on 9-10th July, the second of the two big veteran regattas of the year.

On the Friday (heats), the two Warwick men's veteran B class doubles raced. The combination of Andy Speechly & Steve Burns lost out to a strong crew from Lea. The double of Andre Delahaye & Paul Gosling won through against Milton Keynes, but couldn't overcome the crew from Auriol Kensington in the following round.

On the Saturday (semis & finals), two women's crews were in action. In rocky conditions, the veteran A double of Kate Dickin and Ailsa Curtis lost out to a strong Nottingham / Gloucester composite crew by 2 lengths. The newly formed veteran A quad of Kate Dickin, Kate Parkinson, Joy Green & Ailsa Curtis fought an exciting battle in the final against Barnes Bridge Ladies, finally losing out in the last 200m.

Warwick Success at Ironbridge Regatta
28th June 2010

Photo
Warwick boat club visited the two day Ironbridge regatta in the blistering heat of Shropshire. 12 crews travelled in all, giving Warwick a strong presence at the regatta.

Saturday's crews of the women's IM3 4+, men's IM3 4+ and women's IM2 2x were successful in the early rounds, although none converted to event wins over the longer 1km course.

Sunday's racing was over the shorter 500m course & saw 9 Warwick crews in action.
The women's IM3 4+ and men's Masters B 4+ were unlucky to lose out in their first rounds, but the morning's racing took a turn for the better with the men's IM3 4+ of Shaun Lay, Ben Badcock, Cam Hyde & Tom Grinsted, coxed by Ali Tonkin raced home to secure a long sought after victory. A good race for the IM1 men's 2x of Andy Speechly & Steve Burns resulted in a second win before lunch.

Sunday afternoon's racing saw the women's IM2 2x lose in the final and the Novice men's 4+ miss out in the first round by a mere canvas. The two entrants in singles had mixed success; Harvey racing at the higher IM3 category on the back of her win at Straford lost out in the semi final, Martin's novice event saw an impressive progression to the final, though not quite converting to silverware.

The Masters B men's 2x event contained two Warwick crews, both of whom progressed to set up a Warwick – Warwick final. Clearly club spirit lost out to crew spirit & a fine race was seen, with many tactful cheers of "come on Warwick" from club spirited supporters. The earlier successful crew of Speechly & Burns eventually lost out to the recently crowned National Masters champions of Gosling & Delahaye. The race over, club spirit once again prevailed as all crews retired to celebrate the club's success.

Two Golds for Warwick!

Double Gold for Warwick

Warwick boat club entered National Masters Championships on Sun 13th June and came away clutching gold. The 1km event was held at the six lane lake at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham. With eight Warwick crews entered across the different disciplines, the club's presence was felt from the first race (Joy Green in her 1x) to almost the last race (Paul Gosling & Andre Delahaye's double scull).

The day's racing started well with Joy Green's Masters A1X qualifying for the final. In the final she came up against high quality opposition and finished out of the medals. She also jumped into the coxing seat of the men's Masters B 4+, who qualified for their final. The latter set up the event final featuring both Warwick men's 4+ crews, needless to say competitive spirits were running high. The Warwick A crew of Andre Delahaye, Paul Gosling, Richard Owen & Paul Taylor, coxed by Caroline Gosling came 3rd in the final, beating the Warwick B crew of Jon Martin, Matt Davies, Matt Casey & Rich Pember, and cox Green by clear water.

The well established composite Warwick / Poole Masters D4- of R Wilson, P Jacobs, John Charlesworth & Chris Skuse cruised through their heat to race in a tough final, coming through to take silver. John & Chris also raced in the Masters D coxless pairs event. After a thrilling semi-final, they qualified for the final, but were unable to medal.

Still in their first season of competition together, the women's Masters A quad of Kate Dickin, Kate Parkinson, Helene Moussard & Ailsa Curtis came third in their final. Dickin & Curtis' established Masters A double scull also raced in a closely fought final, coming through to win gold, defending their title of 2009 (photo).

The last Warwick race of the day, in the driving rain, was the also well established Masters B double scull of Andre Delahaye & Paul Gosling. The pair came through to a clear win, bringing home the second set of gold medals of the day.

Warwick Boat Club at Durham Regatta
20th June 2010

Photo
The men's IM3 4+ crew of S. Lay, B. Badcock, S. Hyde and T. Grinstead made the long trip to Durham last weekend for the annual Durham Regatta. Often known as the 'Henley of the North' Durham is the biggest regatta in the north of England and provided strong competition for the boys.

Following comfortable wins against Cambois RC and St. Aidan's College BC on Saturday they came up against a very strong St. John's College crew in the semi-final and were unlucky to lose out by 1/2 length in one of the fastest 4+ races of the day. St. John's went on to win the event, beating Dutch crew Nereus RC.

Shrewsbury Regatta
17th May 2010

Photo
Warwick Boat Club had a successful trip to Shrewsbury Regatta this weekend and recorded a number of wins. The women's IM3 2x (Moussard, Parkinson) and IM3 4x (Moussard, Parkinson, Dickin and Curtis) recorded wins on the Saturday, and the IM1 2x (A. Speechley, S. Burns) and IM3 4+ (J. Martin, M. Davies, M. Casey, R. Pember cox J. Green). This was a first qualifying win for Matt Davies of the IM3 4+ and he recieved a dunking in the River Severn to celebrate (pictured).

Evesham Regatta
4th May 2010

Photo
Warwick Boat Club had varied success at Evesham regatta, one of the first summer regatta of the season, following a disappointingly flooded out winter season.

The two Warwick men’s IM3 coxed fours both progressed through two rounds to set up a Warwick – Warwick semi final, the crew of youth & enthusiasm losing out to age & experience in a closely fought race. Sadly the Warwick crew then lost out to Staines in a close final.
After a nail bitingly close race, the women’s IM3 double scull just missed out to the eventual winners of the event.
The women’s novice double scull bravely embarked on their first event. They won their first race easily, but missing out in the semi finals.
The Masters A women’s double scull led by K Dickin, in their first race representing Warwick, gained a comfortable victory over Evesham, despite a mid-race boat-stopping encounter with a buoy, much to the amusement of the Warwick supporters.

Although the Saturday of Evesham regatta was blessed with gloriously sunny weather, the overnight thunderstorm resulted in the second day being cancelled. A devastating turn of events for the Warwick crews who were well primed for good results on the Sunday. Next regatta: Shrewsbury, 15th May.

4s Head Cancelled
14 November 2009

After much anticipation, the 2009 4s head was cancelled due to high winds and bad weather. Holding out until just 1.5 hours before race time, Warwick crews were seen to be 'tearful' and 'disappointed' the whole thing was called off.

One keen Oarsome Bear was overheard saying "I felt a bit emotional - I could feel myself welling up". "I understand it could be a safety issue but it's just so frustrating!

The Vets head went ahead the following day with a tropical breeze and balmy sunshine.

Warwick Regatta - A success!
22 August 2009

Photo
Warwick Boat Club staged a successful annual regatta on Saturday, with crews from across the Midlands and beyond competing the River Avon.

Soaked in warm August sunshine, Myton fields was buzzing with crowds pouring in from the local area to watch the action.

The Victor Lodurum (the prize for the most wins) this year went to Stratford, with 9 wins, closely followed by Evesham. There was good success for the home club, Warwick but they are illegible for this award, it being their home regatta.

We've had some great feedback from many attendees. Thanks to all that competed and attended the event!

Warwick at Henley
13 July 2009

henley royal vets
After the previous weeks excitement of Henley Royal Regatta, last week saw the turn of the more mature members of the rowing community to take on the historic course at the Henley Veterans Regatta. Though lacking the Pimms and Champagne atmosphere of the Royal Regatta, Henley Veterans Regatta represents the climax of the UK veteran rowing calendar and attracts crews from as far afield as the USA and Australia. A small squad of rowers from Warwick Boat Club made the trip down to Henley and were rewarded with an all Warwick final in the men’s double sculls event for 36-42 year old competitors, after both the clubs crews made it successfully through Friday’s rounds. A strong headwind for Saturday’s final created difficult conditions for both crews, more used to the shelter of the Avon in Warwick, but both made a clean, strong start, with the double of Paul Gosling and Andre Delahaye gaining the early advantage over their club mates Steve Burns and Andy Speechly. Despite a valiant attempt to close the gap by Burns and Speechly, Gosling and Delahaye gradually extended their lead over the second half of the course to win the race and gain a rare win for Warwick at national level competition.

Ironbridge - the long way home!
30 June 2009

Oh dear...
So, Ironbridge regatta was at the weekend. The event passed with mild success with a few wins and several final defeats. The excitement came, however, for the select few who were involved in the trailer pulling. A regatta at the bottom of a steep hill is never going to be child's play for a Land Rover that has not only lived through the industrial revolution but also seen its very existence threatened by the invention of flight.

After one or two false starts (or more appropriately false stops), the Wilde's Land Rover 110 finally died a spectacular death in the innocuous countryside of the Shropshire/Staffordshire/West Midlands hinterland at approximately 10pm.

The heroic few who coaxed this lumbering beast back to Warwick (well done Joy/Jon/Ben/Ali/Paul/Andre/Caroline for stopping and generously giving up all their remaining drinking water for it to be simply blown out of the exhaust pipe in a succession of beautifully formed cumulonimbus...) finally arrived back at 2am. Admirable dedication indeed.

WBC member in Charity World Record Rowing Attempt
07 May 2009

gb row
WBC member Will Homer is part of a 4-man crew attempting to row around the British Isles this summer in order to break a world record for the fastest time and raise money for Orchid, a male cancer charity. The current record stands at 26 days, 23 hours; they aim to be back within 25 days.

The project which cost £30,000 to cover costs of the boat, training, insurance, equipment, food and clothing has been heavily sponsored British Gas, along with Field Overell Solicitors and personal contributions.
The crew will embark on this massive task on 1 July starting from under Tower Bridge in London. The route is fairly simple; anti-clockwise (unless there are serious weather shifts!).

The record attempt has attracted major publicity and there will be a feature on Blue Peter in early June.

In terms of training, Will has an erg in his house and rows everyday, just recently stepping it up to doing 3 hours a day! This is combined with back-strengthening exercises and core work with some swimming thrown in!

As they go round the UK they will have a tracker both for Guinness World Records and for everyone to see where they are. You can visit their website during the row and there will be a map of the UK with their position plotted along with photos, videos and a blog about life on an ocean rowing boat and our progress.

Please on their website www.GBrow.com and donate to Orchid, or at the very least 'leave them a comment'.

John Powell Memorial Row
Thurs 19th june 2008

Photo
Twelve Veteran squad members from Warwick Boat Club are planning to row 133 miles down the River Thames this summer, in memory of a colleague and squad member - John Powell - who died from cancer last year. John was 57.

John was well known in West Midlands rowing circles, having been a member both of Stratford-upon-Avon Boat Club and Warwick Boat Club, as well as a regional regatta umpire. Whilst he was never an elite oarsman, he was always enthusiastic, ever willing to help, and - most of all - possessed a great sense of humour.

The four-day memorial epic takes the rowers from Lechlade in Gloucestershire – the official start of the navigable Thames – to Putney in London, passing 44 locks en route.

Reflecting John’s sense of the ludicrous, the squad plan to complete the journey in two boats – an old and a new: one a modern coxed quad sculling boat, the other a traditional Thames skiff. The squad will rotate between the boats and the support cars.

Funds are being raised for both Myton Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support in recognition of the valued care they provided to John. Funds donated on this page will go solely to Myton Hospice.

We all appreciate what John would have given to have participated in this row. What are you prepared to give?
