Sandra Dean wins three competitions
Sandra Dean has won three title in this year’s internal competitions, which may be a club record. She won the ladies 2 woods, ladies pairs and mixed pairs.
It was an exciting match in the ladies pairs final. Celia Bellamy and Di Wood went into the lead against Cosette Lawton and Sandra Dean having conceded a six on the second end - they were 17-7 up after 11 ends. However, it was 17-17 after 15 ends. After a tight 17th end Bellamy and Wood were up 19-17, but on the last end Lawton and Dean got three with a bowl to spare and ended up winning 20-19.
Sandra Dean also won the club’s 2 woods competition in the Bank Holiday Monday final, which had been postponed from the rain-soaked Sunday, beating Jacqui Ashley 16-11.
Sandra Dean and Barry Golding beat David Hurst and Jacqui Ashley 22-11 in the mixed pairs final.
Les Anscombe emerged victorious from a titanic battle against Martin Dean to retain his men’s singles title.
In a nail-biting final which went to 29 ends Anscombe led early on but Dean came back to lead 20-17 and needed just one point to take the title. Anscombe held his nerve, however, and went on to win 21-20.
In the club’s men’ pairs final Martin Dean and Peter Gawthorpe enjoyed a comfortable 33-6 victory over Graeme Ford and Alan Harvey. Diane Harvey won the Ladies 4 Woods beating Lyn Taylor 22-12. The Plate was won by Vivienne Griffin who beat Peter Lamb in another close final, 21-19 after 29 ends.
