WARWICK BOAT CLUB TENNIS PRESS 4 May 2010
Warwick Boat Club has had a busy week on the tennis courts with the start of the Coventry & District League as well as several matches in other tournaments. In the prestigious Aegon National Club League, the Boat Club Men’s first team were disappointed to lose a crunch match against Sutton which finished 3 rubbers all and was decided on a tie-break shoot-out!
The Club participate in several veterans events including the Classic Mixed. Susie Rowe and David Noyce, Louise Street and Geoff Sault were pleased with a 3-1 victory at home against Blossomfield in this event. In the new Vets Medley event, the Boat Club just lost a close-fought match against visitors from Florence (Staffs not Italy!).
Warwick Boat Club ladies’ teams have had a mixed debut in the Coventry & District League. All started promisingly with the 1st team taking a 4-0 win in their first match against Beechwood 1’s. Susie Rowe and Kate Young, Jackie Robinson and Jackie Sadler fought very close rubbers but came out comfortable overall winners. Susie and Kate helped Jackie Sadler and Rosanne Mann in the 2nd team struggle to a draw against Leamington 1’s. Both Boat Club teams lost to strong Leamington mother and daughter pair, Sarah and Lucy Butler, but beat Leamington’s second pair, just taking the overall match on games. For the 3rd’s, Anna Potts, Cindy Carslake, Louise Street and Odette Sykes unfortunately went down 4-0 against a strong Stratford first team.
The Men’s 1st team eased into their season away to Beechwood 2nd’s: Gavin Henderson, Andy Norton, Hans Enoksen and Paul Martin were nevertheless pleased to come away with a 4-0 victory. Away to David Lloyd Solihull 1st team, the Boat Club Men’s 2nd team were defeated 3-1. Steve Stroud and Dickon Green managed to nick a rubber against the David Lloyd second pair – that match was about as close as it can get with a 16-14 victory in the tie-break, but Gez McVeigh and Jon Isaacs were unable to take a set against the home team. The Men’s 3rd team were pleased to welcome aboard Justin Stead and Tony Ellis who helped them to a 3-1 victory against Hampton. Played in torrential rain at the Boat Club, Justin partnered Geoff Sault to win two tie-break sets against Hampton first pair and then comfortably dispatched the second pair. Jon Isaacs and Tony Ellis beat the Hampton second pair, but had a marathon against the first pair battling to a match point in the tie-break but eventually losing out to the visitors.
The draw has just been made for the Club’s own tournaments with good entries in Open and Handicap events for 2010. Tournament matches will be played over the next few weeks, hopefully culminating in a fine day on 19 June for the finals and family barbeque.
