Warwick Boat Club ladies Over 60’s team were delighted – if somewhat surprised – with a victory this weekend over top club Bridgewater in the National Inter-Club 60’s competition semi-finals.
For the Boat Club Jenny Waggott was beaten by the World over 65’s champion, Ellie Kronke, but Jackie Robinson pulled out all the stops to overcome Jackie Boothman in a very tight three-set match played in blazing sunshine – an exceptional result as Jackie Robinson had not previously beaten the Bridgewater no. 2. The pressure was then on Susie Rowe and Anna Potts to win their doubles against Bridgewater second pair, Anne Louis and Ann Guy. In a nail-biting struggle, the Boat Club pair did manage to take this rubber 6-4 in the third set. Waggott and Robinson then comfortably defeated the Bridgewater second pair, with Bridgewater’s first pair easily overcoming Rowe and Potts.
The 3-2 win puts the Boat Club through to a final against either Purley or the England 45-Club but means they automatically qualify to play in the prestigious European Club Championships to be held in Salzburg next year.
Jenny Waggott and Jackie Robinson from the Boat Club and Jackie Boothman from Bridgewater join forces later this week to represent Great Britain in the World Championships to be played in Turkey.
