WARWICK BOAT CLUB PRESS - 21 June 2010
In one of the busiest week’s of the club’s calendar, the finals of the Warwick Boat Club tournament took place on a rather cool, but dry, Saturday. In some exciting matches, the highlight of the tournament was the success of the club’s own youngsters, Andy Norton, Gerard McVeigh, Charlotte and Agatha Poole. In the Men’s Singles, club coach Gavin Henderson was defeated by Warwickshire champion Paul Martin. Andy Norton and Gerard McVeigh beat Steve Stroud and Leon Hillard-Stewart in the doubles, and Andy Norton and Charlotte Poole played well to overcome Susie Rowe and Leon Hillard-Stewart in the Mixed final. Kate Young overcame Charlotte Poole in the Ladies’ singles final and Susie Rowe and Kate Young defeated Jenny Waggott and Agatha Poole in the Ladies’ doubles.
The ever-popular handicap tournament produced some long and exciting matches when Holly Thompson beat Jo Heap, Will Vaudry won against Ian Sutherland, Imo Hamilton and Lilly Wilkes won on a walk-over, Josh Schlar and Don Clarke beat Tom Harries and David Noyce, and Rosanne Mann and Geoff Reynolds were winners against Alan and Jo Heap.
Following a great day’s tennis, an enjoyable presentation ceremony and family barbecue made an enjoyable end to the celebrations.
In the Coventry and District League, the Men’s 1st team, represented by Andy Norton and Hans Enoksen, Gavin Henderson and Hugh Jacques had a convincing victory against Leamington 1st’s. For the 2nd’s, Dickon Green and Steve Stroud managed to win both their rubbers against Beechwood, resulting in a 2-2 draw, as the Boat Club second pair of Andy Norton and Justin Stead had to concede when Stead sustained an injury. Geoff Sault and Leon Stewart-Hillard, Jon Isaacs and Alex Reynolds were pleased to win a very close 3rd team match against Kenilworth in Division 2. Meanwhile, for the 4th team, Jerry Solven, Andy Wade, Lee Merkwell and David Noyes had a creditable draw against Division 5 leaders, Coventry Sphinx.
The Boat Club ladies have not fared well this week. Despite playing two tie-break rubbers, the 1st team of Kate Young and Susie Rowe, Anna Potts and Charlotte Poole, lost 4-0 to a strong Leamington team of Sarah and Lucy Butler, Irene Paxton and Leanne Supperstone. Cindy Carslake, Tracy Wells, Anna Potts and Odette Sykes were defeated 4-0 at Beechwood, but enjoyed some great tennis in lovely sunshine, and Maggie Buckingham, Agatha Poole, Hazel Lancashire and Lucy Emsden were beaten 3-1 by Esporta 3. The Ladies’ 3rd’s match was postponed due to a heavy downpour of rain.
The next event in the Club’s busy diary is the Open Men’s and Ladies’ Doubles tournament to be held on Sunday 27 June. This event draws the top players from the Midlands regions and some very exciting tennis.

BOAT CLUB BOASTS WORLD CHAMPION!
Jenny Waggott, winner of many national and international tennis events, has just returned from Perth, Australia, with her greatest accolade ever. Jenny was part of the Great Britain team playing in this year’s ITF Super-Seniors World Team Tennis Championships. For the first time in over a decade the British team won the Kitty Godfree Cup (Women’s 65), overcoming Australia in the final. The two British singles players, Jenny Waggott and Sue Hill, defeated their Australian opponents, Margaret Wayte and Heather McKay, to leave the British team with an insuperable 2-0 lead over the hosts. The United States took third place in the Championships, followed by France, South Africa, Switzerland, New Zealand and Japan.
Warwick Boat Club juniors were then lucky enough to be joined on court by club star, Jenny, at a Kings and Queens event held last Sunday. The event was arranged by Junior Organiser, Tamara Harries, to give junior hopefuls a chance to play with top-class – and world-class! – senior club players. Other senior players included Gavin Henderson, Tennis Manager, Paul Martin, 2009 winner of the Warwickshire Men’s Singles event, and Men’s team players Hans Enoksen, Dickon Green, Harry Green, Andy Norton, Gerard McVeigh and Robert Packwell. The successful event was enjoyed by some 36 juniors between the ages of 10 and 17. Warwick Boat Club believes strongly that club juniors gain a lot from playing with senior members and this was certainly reflected in the enthusiasm and standard of play at Sunday’s event.
